Evaluation of Interconnect-Complexity-Aware Low-Power VLSI Design Using Multiple Supply and Threshold Voltages

چکیده
This paper presents a high-level synthesis approach to minimize the total power consumption in behavioral synthesis under time and area constraints. The proposed method has two stages, functional unit (FU) energy optimization and interconnect energy optimization. In the first stage, active and inactive energies of the FUs are optimized using a multiple supply and threshold voltage scheme. Genetic algorithm (GA) based simultaneous assignment of supply and threshold voltages and module selection is proposed. The proposed GA based searching method can be used in large size problems to find a near-optimal solution in a reasonable time. In the second stage, interconnects are simplified by increasing their sharing. This is done by exploiting similar data transfer patterns among FUs. The proposed method is evaluated for several benchmarks under 90 nm CMOS technology. The experimental results show that more than 40% of energy savings can be achieved by our proposed method. key words: high-level synthesis, low power, interconnection network, genetic algorithm

متن کاملLow-Power Field-Programmable VLSI Using Multiple Supply Voltages
A low-power field-programmable VLSI (FPVLSI) is presented to overcome the problem of large power consumption in fieldprogrammable gate arrays (FPGAs). To reduce power consumption in routing networks, the FPVLSI consists of cells that are based on a bit-serial pipeline architecture which reduces routing block complexity. Moreover, a level-converter-less multiple-supply-voltage scheme using dynam...

The use of dual threshold voltages can signiicantly reduce the static power dissipated in CMOS VLSI circuits. With the supply voltage at 1V and threshold voltage as low as 0.2V the subthreshold leakage power of transistors starts dominating the dynamic power. Also, many times a large number of devices spend a long time in a standby mode where the leakage power is the only source of power consum...
متن کاملEvaluation of Dynamic-Threshold Logic for Low-Power VLSI Design in 0.13um PD-SOI
Dynamic Threshold (DTMOS) circuits have been proposed as a circuit style for low-power VLSI systems that takes advantage of the independent body control in partially-depleted SOI. As SOI technologies have scaled, the increasing body capacitance and body resistance have limited the effectiveness of DTMOS circuits that drive the body at the same speed as the gate. An analysis of DTMOS in 0.13μm P...
متن کاملLow-power clock distribution using multiple voltages and reduced swings
Clock networks account for a significant fraction of the power dissipation of a chip and are critical to performance. This paper presents theory and algorithms for building a low power clock tree by distributing the clock signal at a lower voltage, and translating it to a higher voltage at the utilization points. Two low power schemes are used: reduced swing and multiple supply voltages. We ana...
